“Wanting something is not enough. You must hunger for it!”- Les Brown
Hello friends, do you know one attribute that is common to every successful person on this planet?

In my observation and study of successful people, I have come to identify one common factor that’s peculiar to each one of them and that is HUNGER.

Hunger means having a strong desire or craving for something. For us to achieve our dreams, we must get hungry for:

# Knowledge: The day we stop learning is the day we start dying. Get hungry in your area of specialization. Crave to be among the first 5% in your field. The more you know, the better you become. Knowledge is power!

# Change: Newton’s third law of motion states that “every object will assume a state of rest until a relevant force is applied to it.” That relevant force will bring the change you desire and hunger for. Leverage on it and use it to your advantage.

Dream is the actualization of a set goal. You don’t wish your dreams to actualization, rather you pursue your dreams to actualize them. You don’t wait for it to be fulfilled, rather you work at it.

There is something that those that pursue and achieve their dreams have that people on the other side of the table don’t have and that is guts. The high fliers have GUTS to pursue their dreams and not to rest until it is realized. Like a slogan that’s common in my country-‘they are gutted.’

You need to have guts to be able to pursue and achieve your dreams. Why? Because there will always be 1,001 reasons why people will think your dreams may not be realizable. But it all depends on you and what you hold to be true. If you believe you can and if you believe you can’t, you’re right.

There are things that make up the word GUTS and these are the attributes that distinguish successful people from failures. I like to call them Guts-Components and each of the letter of that word combine to form a powerful force in a man’s life.

1. Goal-Getter: High achievers in every sphere of life have a well-defined goal and will always pay the price to get that goal accomplished. They don’t despair because of challenges or trials that they are faced with, rather they disregard the opposition and go for their goals.

2. Unrelenting Pursuit: High achievers don’t relent in their pursuit. One of my mentors sent this quote by Michael Jordan to me last week: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games 26 times. I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeeded.” What a great quote that is! Michael Jordan is an all time legend in the game of basketball. High achievers keep failing forward. They don’t relent in the pursuit of their dreams.

3. Tireless Effort: Nothing of value comes cheap. Every high achiever knows this. They’re aware that effort must be applied to the task for the attainment of their goals. They don’t just apply effort but are tireless in the application of the effort required for success.

4. (Fore)Sight: High achievers always keep the goal in sight. They have foresight. They are always looking ahead. They make mistakes but move on. They don’t allow their mistakes to stop them or slow them down.

Develop these attributes and see yourself flying at the top.

Have a highly productive week!

“Diligence is the mother of good fortune!”- Benjamin Disraeli

The secrets of the successful people are more than the few we’ve been discussing for some weeks now. In previous posts, we had considered some of these secrets: Vision, Courage, Focus and Time Management. The essence of sharing this subject is not for us to limit our understanding to these secrets but to push us to want to know more – study more biographies and autobiographies of great and successful people and learn what it takes to become successful and fulfilled in our areas of influence. This is an information and innovation age and we have no excuse not to be the best in our various fields of endeavor. You can be the best. The world hasn’t seen the best of you yet!

Today, we will draw the curtain on this subject and the fifth and last secret we’ll be sharing is DILIGENCE. In order to fully understand this concept, we need to know that diligence is not just about hardwork, it is equally about smart work. Someone has said that ‘creativity plus diligence equal success’. The creativity side is what is called smart work. Not everyone that is hardworking is successful in his craft. In this dispensation we are in, we need to do more than working hard, we also need to work smart. The good book says: ‘Do you see a man who is diligent in his work? He will stand before kings and not before mere men’. In essence, it’s not just hard work that will bring one to the top of the ladder, it’s much also how creative and skillful one can be at his task that will make all the difference. defines diligence as ‘determination and careful effort’. It goes further to say that ‘an example of diligence is a person who does a job efficiently and takes care of little details’. To be efficient and also to take care of details requires both smartness and hardwork. I think the undoing of Africa is in putting more emphasis on hardwork at the expense of smart work. We need to strike a balance. Work very hard but also embrace smartness in the line of duty. This will catapult you to the top in your field.

This reminds me of the story of one of (if not) the greatest legends in the game of basketball, Michael Jordan. According to, NBA legend Michael Jordan spent his off seasons taking hundreds of jump shots a day. Michael Jordan had prodigious physical gifts. But as his long time coach Phil Jackson writes, it was hard work that made him a legend. When Jordan first entered the league, his jump shot wasn’t good enough. He spent his off season taking hundreds of jumpers a day until it was perfect. In a piece at, Jackson writes that Jordan’s defining characteristic wasn’t his talent, but having the humility to know he had to work constantly to be the best.

Michael Jordan was smart enough to know that he had to be humble and to work constantly to be the best. It is not just about working hard, it is also being smart to know what to do to be the best. To be humble to put in the extra time and extra effort to know your craft is to be smart. Why? Because while you’re putting in the extra time to learn the stuff, you’re actually learning how to do it much better. That is smart work.

It is the diligent that shall bear rule, so says the good book. Being skillful at your job and excelling at it is what sets you apart from the crowd. Be diligent!

You will excel!

“Time cannot be stored, it cannot be stretched, it can only be invested or spent!”  (Anonymous)

Hello friends. Trust your day is going pretty well?

We continue on the series Success Secrets. This week, we’ll look at one of the most significant attributes of the successful people and that’s TIME MANAGEMENT. It is one of the secrets of successful people. They don’t just spend their time, rather they invest it wisely. Successful people have huge respects for their time since they know it is much more than money, it is life. I heard the quote written above on time from one of my mentors while growing up and it has stayed with me ever since. The rich and the poor, black and white, man and woman all have equal number of hours daily. The choice of investing or spending time is what eventually determines whether one is successful in life or not.

What is time?  According to, time is defined as “the duration in which all things happen, or a precise instant that something happens.” On the other hand, time management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Simply put, time management means “working smarter to enhance productivity.” Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time, even when time is tight and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress.

This is a story which perfectly highlights the importance of time management:

A lecturer at a university is giving a pre-exam lecture on time management. On his desk is a bag of sand, a bag of pebbles, some big rocks and bucket. He asks for a volunteer to put all three grades of stone into the bucket, and a keen student duly steps up to carry out the task, starting with the sand, then the pebbles, then the rocks, which do not all fit in the bucket.

“This is an analogy of poor time management,” trills the lecturer, “If you’d have put the rocks in first, then the pebbles, then the sand, all three would have fit. This is much like time management, in that by completing your biggest tasks first, you leave room to complete your medium tasks, then your smaller ones. By completing your smallest tasks first you spend so much time on them you leave yourself unable to complete either medium or large tasks satisfactorily. Let me show you..”
And the lecturer re-fills the bucket, big rocks first, then pebbles, then sand, shaking the bucket between each so that everything fits.

The moral of the story is this: Plan time-slots for your big issues before anything else, or the inevitable sand and water issues will fill up your days and you won’t fit the big issues in.

Balance is key. Make everything fits. We need to manage our time well to achieve balance in life and achieve great success in every sphere of our lives.

You will excel!

Welcome to a new day. This day will be a better day than the previous as you make effort to get better than the previous.

For over two weeks now, we’ve been looking at some of the secrets of successful people. This is the third in the series.  We have still got two more to consider after this.

Another secret of the successful people is FOCUS. It is one of the attributes that distinguish high fliers in life. The difference between ‘here‘ and ‘there‘ is ‘t‘ and in elementary physics, ‘t‘ is denoted as ‘time‘. What determines the time we get to our destination in a pursuit is ‘Focus’. The more focused you are, the faster you get results. The more focused you are, the less you will be affected by distractions. Knowing what you want (clarity), what you need to do to achieve it (cost), giving it what it takes to get it done (discipline), and staying at it until it is achieved (focus), is the hallmark of the successful people. The first 3 steps will lead to nothing if the last step is not included. Focus is a key ingredient that must be included in the recipe of successful living. I call focus the ‘staying power‘- the ability to stay on a cause until it brings out the star in you. It means to direct one’s attention or effort to something. Focus makes a lot of difference and it largely determines the level of our effectiveness and productivity as an organization, individuals, family or a nation.

There’s this short story I read about sometimes ago that perfectly illustrates the power of focus. Below is the story:

In the Mahabharata (a major epic in Ancient India), Arjuna is being taught archery by his guru (teacher) along with the other students. The guru Dronacharya hung a wooded crow, from a tree branch and then summoned his students, telling the students to aim for the crows eye but first to explain what they see. The first student approaches and the teacher asks the student “What do you see?” the student says “I see the garden, the tree, the flowers, everything!” The teacher asks the student to step aside and not to shoot. He asked the next student and was told something similar “I see the air and leaves blowing in the wind..” The guru Dronacharya asks a few more students and they all have similar replies. Then came Arjuna, when Arjuna was asked what he saw he said “The only thing I can see is the crows eye”. Guru Dronacharya said “Release your bow” and Arjuna hit the crow in the middle of his eye.

I hope that with a little reflection you can see how powerful yet simple that story is. Use it next time you need to focus. Concentrate on what matters in the pursuit of your dreams. It will make a whole lot of difference for you, and of course, for me.

You will excel!

“Courage is the willingness to act in spite of fear”- Michael Hyatt

Good morning friends. Welcome to a new day of unlimited opportunities. This is going to be your best day yet!

This week we continue on our discussion on Success Secrets. The number two secrets of the successful people is COURAGE. defines Courage as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear.” It is the ability to do something that frightens one. Some words that are synonymous with courage are: bravery, valour, audacity, fearlessness, boldness, grit, daring etc.
Success belongs to the brave because success doesn’t come easy. You have to go all out for it.

Courage is a desirable quality that distinguishes successful people in any field of endeavor. Without courage, success is unattainable. This is simply because there are numerous obstacles that one will face and confront on the path to attaining success in any venture.

Courage is what gives you the ‘staying power’ in the face of opposition. The person that will eventually come out as a success will not throw in the towel where others have given up because he possesses this desirable quality called courage. Courage is a virtue that everyone that desires to be successful in life must embrace, for without a lion-heart , you can’t take the lion-share. For instance, starting a business from the scratch is no joke. You need to be audacious to make some moves and take some daunting steps. Ask any successful and fulfilled entrepreneur and he will tell you of some daunting steps he had to take to get his business to the level it is today.

The best way to drive home this discourse is the story of an entrepreneur in Nigeria, Africa. This woman started a business with less than $5 and has built the business venture within a space of 10 years to over $100,000 in turnover.  Mrs Ayodeji Megbope, CEO, No Left Overs Nigeria Limited, is an example of an entrepreneur, who with courage and bravery built a seemingly odd business (selling moi-moi (bean cake)  to people) to a world-class business institution. People out of pity tried to talk her out of doing the business when she started out, but in her own words, “I sold still.” What a statement! That is a courageous statement from an audacious woman. Today, she’s not only successful and fulfilled, much more she’s providing solution to hunger problem in our world and putting smiles on so many faces.

You’re born to win, therefore you must be courageous to lay hold on that prize. Dare that task, be audacious, and be fearless, even in the face of adversity. For you to achieve anything worthwhile in this life, you’ve got to be daring. Remember, the lion-share is yours for taking, but you must possess a lion-heart (courage) to lay hold on it.

Be strong and very courageous.

You will excel!

It’s been a long time I put something down on this blog. I had given all manner of excuses for not writing all the while. Excuses will only excuse one on the path to greatness. The vision I have for people to be all that they are created to be brought me back in line. I’m also grateful for the gift of quality and  precious people around me (my inner circle). You guys believe in what I’m doing and that has really encouraged me. I jerked back to life and decided to finish up with this particular article and post it here. Irrespective of the fact that you’re trying to fine tune that particular dream or anything you’re doing, just keep moving. Dont stop moving. Vision will always bring you back in line, even though you have drifted away. I’m back for good!

Over the next few weeks, i’ll be sharing some secrets on how to be successful in life. The tips I’ll be sharing are things most of us already know and as such are not secrets in that light. They are secrets of the successful people in our world and ages past and I’ll be sharing some stories along with each of these tips. As you are well aware, that the secrets of the successful people are in their stories.

You can be sure to get the same results or greater results and become a successful person in your chosen field as you embrace these success secrets and apply them to your particular situation or circumstance.

So, let’s get the ball rolling:

“In business, vision is foresight – the capacity to envisage future market trends and plan accordingly.” (Anonymous)

The statement above is not only true for business, it is also true for any endeavor of life- family, organization and nation.

Simply put, vision is the ability to see into the future and plan accordingly. The clearer you see, the higher you fly. Your height in life depends on your sight. You can never go farther than you can see.

The number one secret of the successful people is vision. Vision is the ability to feature the picture of your future in the present.

The story that comes to mind is that of the wife of the man that founded the Disneyland. On the opening day of the facility, the man that gave the opening speech said it would have been nice if the founder was alive to see the grand opening. When it came to the turn of the wife of the founder to speak, she said ‘My husband actually saw this facility in the eyes of his mind before he passed away’. That is the power of vision.

Vision gives you focus, direction, concentrates your energy on a given task, helps you to fight distraction and helps you to leverage and invest your time wisely.

The future of your business, family, organization or nation is dependent on the quality of the vision you have for it. What can you say about the future of that venture you’re involved in? The good book says ” Without vision, the people perish”. The reason we have many businesses, marriages, organizations and nations folding up these days is because of lack of vision.

As you go about your activities this week, get a vision for that task in your hand. Get a vision statement for your business, family, organization or nation. Set a short-term, medium-term and long-term goals in line with the vision you have and you will see it come to pass.

You will excel!

I am @blessingolumide on twitter.

The holy book admonishes us that “The vision is yet for an appointed time, wait for it. Though it tarry, it will surely speak at the end…”
There’s a tendency for us to want to throw in the towel when we consider the tides of events around us sometimes. At such instances, you seemed to be overwhelmed with life situations and circumstances. Things don’t seem to be going the way you have planned and it’s looking like your dreams are far from looking to come to pass.

I’ve got good news for you friends. If you will keep on keeping up, your dreams will surely come to pass. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. It is not over until you win.

Don’t give up and don’t let go of your steam and passion and drive. You will surely get there!

“Leadership is a service you render, not a status you attain!” – Olumide Olaoye

Leadership is service and service is leadership. The two words are interwoven. The reason is not far fetched. You cannot fulfil your leadership potential without having the mindset of service. And when you serve, you eventually emerge a leader.

One bible character that sends this message home is David. David was one of the greatest and finest kings Israel has ever produced. David emerged as a great leader because he had the heart of service. He learnt to become a servant as a shepherd boy and he eventually became a great king, prophet and priest. In the year 1997, they celebrated the 3,000th year David named Jerusalem the ‘City of David’. His secret is summed up in this statement: “For David, after he had SERVED his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption.” (Acts 13:36)

We can draw some lessons from this:
* Servant-leaders leave legacies that will pass the test of time.
* Servant-leaders don’t truly die. Their works speak on even after they have gone.
* Servant-leaders are trans-generational.

Friends, as you step out this week, don’t just look out for what you can get. Rather, look for where you can serve and make a difference.

Have a lovely week!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.  It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.  We are all meant to shine, as children do.  We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ Marianne Williamson

Hello Friends! I believe this’s going to be an awesome week for you as you face your fears headlong.

I thought to drop these few thoughts of mine as we begin a new week.

Fear is that thing that hinders us from maximizing our potentials to the full. It hinders you and me from living a full life. It’s that thing hindering you from taking that bold step so as to change the course of your life. Fear overwhelms its victim and incapacitates his life so as to remain on the same spot year in, year out.

I’ve come to understand that every successful person in life has learned to master their fears and take action irrespective of their fears. You cannot achieve anything worthwhile if you allow your fears to get the better part of you.

You have got to confront your fears to achieve your dreams. You can’t afford to wait for the coasts to be totally clear before you move your ship, you’ve got to move all the same.

I’ve come to tell you this morning that ‘you must face your fears to phase it out’. Someone has said that “when fear comes knocking at the door of your heart, let faith answer the door and the fear would have disappeared.”

So, what can you do to control and master your fears? I have these few suggestions:

1. Acknowledge your fears: Come to the open and acknowledge that you’re fearful. When you come to this level, half of the problem is already solved.

2. Address the root-cause of your fears: Once you’ve acknowledged that you’re fearful, you need to go to the root of your fears-past negative experiences, past failures, negative childhood background, abuse, fear of the future, fear of the unknown etc-and deal with it. Ask yourself, ‘why am I afraid of this thing?’ As you do this, you’ll discover most of the times that F.E.A.R. is nothing but False Evidence Appearing Real. It’s just your perception. Reality is not the same as perception.

3. Attack your fears: What will you use to attack your fears? It is light. Light is indirectly proportional to fear. The higher your intensity of light in a particular area of life, the lower your fear will be in that area. So what do you do to attack your fears? Beam the rays of light in the direction of your fears. Get information in that area. Go for light and you’ll see the fears diminish and vanish.

4. Act irrespective of your fears: Champions are not wishers. They are actors. They act, irrespective of their fears. The reason is because they know that the source of the fear is just a myth. It is not real. So, they go to work with their heart irrespective of what their head is saying.

If you act on these few suggestions, you would have killed that monster called fear and you will become a better person and achieve greater results this week and the rest of your life.

Face your fears and phase it out.
